Welcome To The City Of Izmir, Turkey. Approximate Dates: January 1978-April 1979
Where is Izmir Turkey? The city of Izmir Turkey is located in the western portion of the country. Even though Izmir is a seaport, it is actually on a saltwater bay about 50 miles from the Aegean Sea. Here is a map showing where Izmir is: For a great source of maps, on the web, click here to visit Maps.com. Click on above thumbnail to expand image. Use the "Back" button on your browser to return to this page. My assignment here was not actually to a traditional "base". This is because, at that time, our duty locations were scattered in, and around, the vicinity of Izmir. Here is a map showing the immediate vicinity of Izmir: For another great source of maps, on the web, click here to visit Mapquest.com. Click on above thumbnail to expand image. Use the "Back" button on your browser to return to this page. This Page Is Under Construction. Click here to visit the Joint Signal Support Group. Historical Note! A number of changes have taken place in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) over the last several years. Changes have taken place at NATO, the intermediate headquarters at Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH). and our headquarters in Izmir. When I was stationed in Izmir, the name of our headquarters was called Allied Land Forces Southeastern Europe (LANDSOUTHEAST). Within the last couple of years, the name of this command has changed. It is now known as the Joint Command SOUTHEAST (JCSOUTHEAST). Please stop in to the following links below and read the fact sheets available on them to see the major changes that have taken place over the past several years.
