Welcome To The Armed Forces Examining And Entrance Station - Seattle Washington.

Approximate Dates: June-October 1972

Where is AFEES?

In my area, the closest AFEES was located in Seattle Washington.  Seattle Washington is located in the western half of the State or Washington, about halfway between the Canadian Border, on the north, and the Columbia River, on the south.  Here is a map showing exactly where Seattle is:

My Story

OK, you've arrived.  What's in store for you now?  Welcome to AFEES.  This operation, which is run by the U.S. Army, provides the aptitude testing, medical testing and induction, for all the U.S. Armed Forces.

On your first visit there, you took two written tests.  These tests are:

  • Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB)
  • Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT)

After the written tests, a complete physical examination was done.  After these tests were completed, I had to wait for the results.  I think that after a couple of weeks, or so, the results were available and provided to my recruiter.

After going over everything with my recruiter, I entered the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) for three months.  In a nutshell here is how this system worked, at that time.

On your second visit to AFEES,  you took the Oath Of Enlistment and became an unpaid member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve.  You didn't get an identification card or anything like that.  You then kept in contact with your recruiter until you departed for basic training.

On your third, and last, visit to AFEES, you took your packed bags, took your Oath Of Enlistment, received your orders and departed for basic training.  On the day I went to basic, I traveled with four other people.  The names. and hometowns, of these people were:

Name Hometown
Derek S. Benedict Seattle Washington
Gregory R. Condon Seattle Washington
Steven M. Smith Seattle Washington

Cyrus F. Thornton

Forks Washington

Historical Note!

Since I entered basic training, a lot has changed.  AFEES has now become the United States Military Entrance Processing Command (USMEPCOM).  The names of the stations have changed also.  They are now referred to as Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS).  If you desire to visit this command, click on the logo below
